"Griggs"

This was an early concept for the transformation of the Griggs character in the helicopter scene.

Alec Gillis suggested a slow distortion of the face, with a deep split running up from his throat which would disgorge the unpleasant protuberances depicted here.

It was felt that the extended legs were too reminiscent of a fantasy creature, so they were reverted to normal human proportions in the maquette.

I based the withered, bent back upper body on Joel Peter Witkin's portrait of "The Goddess Bunny."

Some background info on the unused Pilot Alien.

Basically the spaceship would have been originally crewed by an alien race which, as it was relayed to me, would have been on a planet to planet zoological expedition, collecting different creatures and storing them in these containment pods.

One of those creatures just happened to be The Thing in disguise, and the rest is history.

At the core of this thing is a sculpt I did back in my second year of art school.

Between other projects, I would add parts and remove parts, until it ended up like this.

I 'deified' it with the base some time later, with that lotus pattern being an exercise in self-discipline, or perhaps acute masochism.

Here's a piece Paul recently finished on one of his late night excursions to Denny's.

Often times while working on a project, Paul will take a break and head over to the nearby Denny's and draw in his sketchbook.

Denny's hosts an amazing array of live creature models from 1am to 6am. Always great reference!

Paul Komoda's Julia Coming Soon...

Some of you might remember Paul Komoda's Julia sculpture released as a limited edition resin kit back in the 90's.

A few weeks ago at Monsterpalooza, we had Paul's personal painted copy on display at our table, and the response was overwhelming.

We've decided to do a very limited release of this piece, tentatively titled "Julia 2" the figure and base retooled.

The molds will be made from the original super sculpey parts, pictured above.

Paul will be going over each part, meticulously refining details and bringing this new version to a whole new level.

This last weekend was Monsterpalooza and it was a pleasure meeting everyone there! The show surpassed our expectations, every year it keeps getting better and better!

We haven't forgotten about everyone who posted comments during the contest and will be announcing the winner in the next few days.

FLUFFY!

Long before I had ever considered sculpting as a "career option", my first creative impulse was to tell stories, visually, either through comics or illustrated books, and over time I amassed a considerable number of recurring characters with which to populate these monster-ridden tales.

Fluffy, who had his origins as a plush toy lamb from early childhood, had, over the years evolved into what I can only describe as my signature cartoon character.

He went from resembling a benign, bipedal version of my lamb toy, to a doughy looking creature bearing an immense, black, reflective proboscis.

A few years ago while living in Philadelphia, I was dismayed to realize that I hadn't drawn him in an appallingly long time.

When, after a few false starts, I DID start drawing him again, Fluffy re-emerged in a delirious multiplicity of ferociously perverse, mutant variations, a small example being presented here.

Last year when we released Norm's S.L.E. Syndrome bust, the first 15 customers received a one-of-a-kind super sculpey head as a bonus.

The above heads were made during the same time as the other bonus pieces.

Jason Tarpley painted a few of them up and they will be on display at this weekends Monsterpalooza.

Here's a new piece I just finished for the Dem Bonez "The Reconstruction" show. The show opened last night at the Zakka Gallery in New York and will be up for the next three weeks.

The show is filled with a bunch of amazing artists from many different fields. Every artist received a vinyl blank to customize specifically for the show.

I AM LEGEND - Early Komoda Concept Art

Here are some never before seen concept illustrations Paul did for I Am Legend. Paul was brought into the project to design and refine the look of the "Hemocytes" or "Darkseekers"

You can get a glimpse of Paul's design process, as he starts with a pencil sketch defining the forms. Once everyone's on the same page, Paul takes a pass at coloring the drawings. More from Paul below:

Vampire-Alpha Male

I had a very brief stint on the 2007 version of "I Am Legend" in which I had been contacted by Mike Marino of Prosthetic Renaissance about doing several concept drawings of the vampires.

Alpha Female

Time was a factor, since I had been told that several practical FX shops had already been put through the process, and not worked out.

Mike had already been doing Will Smith's makeup on the show, so production turned to him for the realization of the creature/character group.

Even if the designs were approved, there would have been less than a month to sculpt, mold, apply, and paint full body prosthetics for multiple performers.

I kicked a number of concept drawings out in a few days, and when all was done and submitted (along with some beautiful work by Andrew Jones ), we waited through an uncomfortable period of uncertainty.

Mike called me a few days later, exasperated, and told me that the director had decided on a completely different approach, and gotten rid of all the creature performers, and were going completely CG.

Filled with monstrous images from Paul's dreams, you can also see an early design pass on the devil ring Paul would ultimately sculpt. Also on the page, is an early Medusa pendant design, a piece Paul has revisited many times.

"The red haired creature on the bottom is from a dream. It's mouth looked like a torn rubber mask that was pure, featureless red on the inside.

There was also a blue multi limbed humanoid crawling on the ceiling whose exposed spine and pelvis resembled a welded, filagree construct of sheet metal."

Battle LA Maquettes

Here are a few pics showcasing the work Paul did on the Battle LA Alien maquettes. Paul worked on these with Jordu Schell a while back and most of these pics have never been seen before.

The first picture shows the alien roughed in with chavant. From there Paul took a variety of different scrap model kit parts and kit-bashed the mechanical elements of the sculpt. Many different wires, hoses and even leather string was incorporated into the piece.

The piece was painted by hand with many different layers of washes and fine details were done with an airbrush.

The first of many drawings from an early Paul Komoda sketchbook, we present to you, "The Mutant Gillman."

In the coming months, I'll be posting some pages from the sketchbook I kept in the late 90's, prior to the one that's gained a degree of notoriety of late.

There was a period in the 90's when many deformed frogs were appearing bearing clusters of extra legs due to chemical changes in the ecosystem.

I simply applied that condition to a creature that might not take it so passively!

Paul Komoda's Human Pathology Volume 2

Back in the 90's Paul Komoda designed & sculpted this compelling portrait of Joseph Merrick, aka The Elephant Man.

Molded & Cast by Luis De La Fuente of Grey Zon, this piece was extremely limited, available almost exclusively at model kit shows like Chiller in New Jersey.

On a trip back east last year, Paul unearthed the original Super Sculpey master from a box filled with other ancient treasures. Paul decided to rework the piece, refining certain details and designing a new base.

The picture above shows a rare glimpse into Paul's design process. After taking pictures of the sculpt, he draws on top of it working out the design. Once satisfied, he begins the sculpture.

The new version of the Elephant Man will be available sometime in January.

Agony Man & Friends

Here’s an Agony Man sculpture Paul created many years ago. Measuring in at 12 inches tall, and sculpted out of Super Sculpey, Paul felt the character wasn’t in enough Agony. The piece was ultimately abandoned. Be on the lookout for a new version of him sometime in the near future.

Back in the mid 1990's Paul Komoda released his version of Dr. Channard, based on Clive Barker's Hellbound: Hellraiser 2.

Coming in at just over 1/6 scale this was a massive resin kit chock full of detail.
From the tight organic leather uniform to the twisted flesh of the massive tentacle suspending him above the base, this kit was a modeler's paradise.

Paul recently found a handful of sketches he did prior to sculpting this character.
We're thrilled to be able to share them with you for the first time.

New Resin Busts by Jordu Schell

Our friend and co-conspirator Jordu Schell recently announced a new series of resin busts for sale on his site. This new series released exclusively through Schell Sculpture Studio will focus on a variety of different fantasy, horror and sci-fi themed subjects all designed and sculpted by Jordu Schell.

It's a weekly tradition for many of us to go over to Jordu's studio and sculpt together.

Sculpting by nature can be very isolating at times, sitting at your work desk alone.

Monsterpalooza Collaboration Sculpture!

A few weekends ago we had a table at Monsterpalooza and decided with all the incredible talent around us, we just had to do a collaboration sculpt!

Paul Komoda and I started things off. Finding our armature was a bit wonky, our friend and artist Toi Ogyunoku jumped in for some sculpture surgery, reinforcing the armature.

After the armature was repaired and we worked the sculpt for a while, we sent the it over to the Shiflett Brothers so they could work their magic on it.

From there the sculpt traveled to Simon Lee / Spiderzero who took it to a whole new level of cool.

After that we passed it along to sculptor Damon Bard who added his own bit of madness to the sculpt.

Finally we handed it over to Jordu Schell who added even more insanity to the piece.

These pics are from the show and are not the final ones.
I'm in the process of taking better pics and will be sure to update this thread.
I'll also post the w.i.p. pics we took throughout the show.

Creature Bust Update

Here are some updated pics of our newest release.
We're still working on a name, but here's some of the background story.

A strange virus takes over its host mutating them into a twisted deformed being.

During the mutation process, the virus allows the host's face to appear and look at its new body, the virus being proud of its work.

When the host/victim inevitably freaks out, the head is re-absorbed and the virus gets to work creating an even more horrifying mutation. It's an endless cycle.

Paul Komoda's Elephant Man - Human Pathology Series Vol. 2

We are pleased to announce that Volume 2 of Paul's Human Pathology series, The Elephant Man is around the corner and will be released soon! Paul sculpted the original Elephant Man bust in the mid to late 90's as a personal project which was released in very limited numbers.

Molded and cast by Luis De La Fuente of Grey Zon, this bust was available for a very brief period at a few model kit shows. Now, do to popular demand, Paul has decided to revisit this piece, refining the details even more and sculpting an entirely new base.

Here are a few miscellaneous sculpts from the past year. Many of these were quick sketches, just roughing out the character to see if I wanted to pursue it further.

This guy here was for an independent horror film called Animal. This was one of a few different maquettes I did for the director. Super Sculpey, 1/4 scale.

A quick study of Pumpkinhead, one of my favorite creatures. It's roughly 1/2 scale, in super sculpey. I recently transferred it to wax to do the final detailing.

This last guy is sculpted out of super sculpey, magic sculpt and animal bones.

Fat Zombie painted by Jason Tarpley

I'm proud to show off Jason Tarpley's build up of my Fat Zombie kit! Jason really knocked this bad boy off the charts!

Jason is known for doing a large amount of research before each project, diving deep into the internet's darkest places. I think his research paid off!

I'll be posting the background story of the Fat Zombie and the world he lives in tomorrow.

Fat Zombies carry a variety of different weapons, many of them embedded in their flesh.

One such weapon you can see in the below picture - a tightly woven bomb, filled with bones, flesh and wires.

The outside casing or shell is a human head. When the moment is right, the fat zombie pulls a rip cord triggering the bomb to explode.

This causes a chain reaction triggering other areas of the fat zombie's body to release toxins and small violent creatures to the surrounding area.

The crab claws give a glimpse into one such creature!

If you frequent online forums like the Halloween Mask Association or The Shiflett Bros. sculpting forum then you are familiar with Aris' amazing work!

If not, feast your eyes on the images below. Aris is all about original designs and creates both small scale and lifesize sculptures. Most of his pieces are cast in silicone or latex and sold pre-painted to collectors.

We are happy to announce that Aris will be producing a new line of original works for Artist Proof Studio! Over the next few weeks we will be showing more pictures of his work so stay tuned.

Paul Komoda's RanXerox Bust Version 2

Some of you might remember an earlier post of Paul's 1st pass at the Italian comicbook character Ranxerox.

This highly controversial character graced the pages of Heavy Metal magazine premiering in the early 80's.

After auctioning off the first sculpt, done in super sculpey, Paul decided to revisit the character, this time in wax. Wax allows for a higher level of detail and has many fantastic qualities.

This sculpt, still a work in progress will most likely be available in very limited quantities sometime in the future.

With the release of the latest Kitbuilders Issue (#62) we are finally able to reveal the amazing paint work of Jason Tarpley!

Jason has been beyond supportive of our works since the beginning and has painted nearly all our releases.

He painted the Chelonian Warrior with our own Paul Komoda winning 2nd place at AFM's Model Contest at Monsterpalooza!
